How is it that communication is both the easiest and most complicated thing to do in this world? There are so many ways we can express ourselves; through verbal speaking and singing, the written word, body language, facial expressions, hand gestures and even through unspoken glances. We have the tools to transcend language barriers, speak to the hearing disabled and instantly make contact through innovative technology, yet we consistently fail to communicate with each other.

 

We hold ourselves back from truth, and in doing so, neglect our own voice. We are too busy worrying about what another would think or how they would respond that we filter what we say, how we say it and over-communicate so they “understand” what we mean. But in reality, it isn’t really true to who you are; it ends up being a fabrication that covers up the real meaning behind what you are trying to communicate. And that’s where we fail at being communicators.

 

It isn’t that we are trying to be liars or inauthentic about ourselves. It’s just a natural mechanism to either protect another from how we feel, or protect ourselves from rejection or lack of acceptance. But neither should be the case. What you have to say is important; your feelings, your perspectives, your message. It all is meant to be expressed. Do not deny yourself or the other person the opportunity to hear you clearly and listen to what you have to say. There is great value in an open and honest exchange, and a presentation of unique perspectives.

 

Not everyone agrees, and not everyone may respond perfectly. But if we tiptoe around everyone as if we’d break glass by speaking the truth, then all that we are doing is hiding from reality, and distorting our relationships.

 

Break free from these communication bonds. Speak from your heart. Speak from your wisdom. Speak from a place of compassion, but for yourself as much as for another. Let yourself be heard; and in return, listen just as intently and openly, and accept another’s communications as their truth, even if it conflicts with yours. It’s the only way to have open, honest connections with the people around you, and have the peace of knowing you can freely express yourself from your core.

As Whitsons’ Director of Communications, Jennifer leads our business development efforts in writing proposals and client communications, as well as designing and implementing direct marketing and social media campaigns. She is editor-in-chief of our corporate newsletter, Traditions, and team member e-newsletter, Monthly Happenings. She also supports the operations team on a variety of projects, including concept development, coordination of company meetings and documentation control. She is also actively involved in our not for profit charitable Whitsons Family Foundation for team members and ACT research and development council.
