Every year the School Nutrition Association (SNA) conducts a National Leadership Program that gathers school nutrition future leaders from all over the country. These leaders are especially selected by the SNA’s state chapters based on their strong leadership potential, commitment to a career in school nutrition and their deep interest in contributing to the long term growth and development of their local and state association.
April Liles, Whitsons Food Service Director at Newton Public Schools, was selected as one of the two representatives for the state of Massachusetts. Ms. Liles is a Registered Dietitian with vast school nutrition experience, and has been an SNA member for over 7 years serving on SNA committees in Florida and locally in her prior school district. According to Ms. Liles, leadership is not just about making your team perform, but about truly motivating them, “As a leader, my interest has always been on how to get people to do something because they want to, not because they feel they are obligated. Engaging your team, whether it is a sports team, your family, or your team at work is about the same leadership principles.”
The 2012 Future Leaders Conference was held in Louisville, Kentucky from April 26th to 28th. In this conference, the future leaders received further leadership training to ensure the growth of the association and be able to build strong networks. Furthermore, Ms. Liles has been chosen to represent Whitsons at the SNA’s 2012 Annual Conference in Denver, CO.
