Marketing Programs

A successful school dining program begins with a “Food First” philosophy, a focus on serving wholesome, great tasting foods that parents would serve from their own kitchens. Our marketing programs build upon this simple premise with exciting, targeted communications and special programs that add “SPICE” to the menu and help to make breakfast and lunch times an integral part of the educational experience, while increasing program participation.

Secondary School Marketing Programs

Tweens and teens need to be able to embrace their individuality, while learning how to make healthy dining choices. Our secondary school marketing reinforces healthier eating, while providing a variety of menu options from which to choose.

  • SPICE™ Quarterly Menu Special Program. Our quarterly SPICE marketing program features 20-30 special limited-time-offer menu options around a specific, seasonally-appropriate theme. Each quarter, the theme is introduced with flyers for customers and various point-of-sale materials such as posters, flyers, table tents and themed menu paper highlighting the specials. SPICE specials rotate through the menu at least once or twice per week. Guest chefs are also available to host an action station featuring one of the SPICE menu specials.
  • SPICE Bites™ Monthly Themed Menus. A mini version of our quarterly marketing program, SPICE Bites features 3-4 special menu items each month, focused on a particular cuisine or theme. Menu items are developed by a different location manager or chef each month, and recipes are made available to the entire School Nutrition division.

  • Smart Choices™ Secondary Nutrition Education Program. Every month, we feature a special nutrition message and corresponding Smart Choices theme menu to educate the students about an important nutrition topic. These topics are supported by our monthly Smart Choices newsletter, which is distributed via our Smart Choices message centers, along with our Smart Choices info series cards on various nutrition topics.
  • Monthly Seasonal Menu Specials. We offer a special “holiday” menu once per month, reflecting a special celebration recognized that month as approved by the district.
  • Daily Menu Offerings at our Signature Series Stations. We offer a variety of menu options at different branded stations every day. Each station has its own marketing look and feel, and menu specials are offered every day.
  • Rotating Specialty Stations and Food Bars. We often feature new station concepts and food bars on a rotating basis, promoted through posters and POS signage.
  • Chef Trek™ Guest Chef Program. Occasionally, one of Whitsons’ talented guest chefs will come on-site to promote a healthy food option, cook-to-order style.
  • Special Events. In addition to regular promotions, special events like National Nutrition Month in March are celebrated with special menu items, information tables and healthy giveaways or taste tests, or special week-long events such as “No Junk Food Week” or “National Breakfast Week.”
  • Product Tastings. We set up displays of new products and services where customers can participate in free tastings of potential new menu offerings. As a result of these tastings, we then add new items deemed popular into our menus to keep our program fresh and exciting.
  • Fruit/Vegetable of the Month Program. In addition to the wide variety of vegetables and fruits we offer on our daily menus, we highlight a different fruit or vegetable each month, with additional menu offerings, posters and flyers.
  • Activity of the Month Program. Various seasonally appropriate activities are highlighted each month on posters and flyers, to remind students of the importance of regular physical activity.

  • Wholesome Menus with Daily Healthy Offerings. Our program begins with a solid base of healthy daily menu offerings. All menu items meet or exceed federal and state nutrition requirements for a healthy school breakfast or lunch. Fresh fruits and veggies are served every day, as well as a variety of lean proteins, whole grains, low fat dairy and 100% fruit juice.
  • Elementary Chef Trek Program. This is a unique nutrition education program developed by Whitsons in order to introduce crisp flavorful fruits and vegetables to young palettes and create life-long, healthy eating habits. • Nutrition Safari® Elementary Nutrition Program. Whitsons launched its award-winning Nutrition Safari program in 2003, which quickly became widely recognized for its innovative approach to educating elementary school children about healthy eating. The program uses loveable animal characters to help identify the food groups and explain the components of a healthy meal.

    • Nutrition Safari Monthly Theme Day. Each month, we offer a monthly theme day highlighting a particular nutrition theme or tip, including a special menu for the day.
    • Character Visits. All Whitsons-managed school locations are required to have a character visit every year, from one or all of the 6 Nutrition Safari characters. The character visit is advertised in advance and includes a skit with a Safari ranger who speaks for the character and engages the children in a related nutrition lesson within the character’s area of expertise.
    • Nutrition Safari Handouts. The program includes monthly activity sheets and coloring pages and activities books that are available to reinforce healthy eating messages.
    • Nutrition Safari Educational Posters and Décor. The program also includes a series of posters on MyPlate, the components of a meal and portion sizes, as well as the characters and their nutrition messages. In addition, the children are guided through the servery with floor stickers and serving glass clings identifying the food groups and related characters for each menu offering. Welcome signs, life-sized character cutouts and custom counter face graphics round out the décor package for this program.
  • Holiday or Seasonal Theme Days and Recurring Monthly Promotions. Each month we celebrate a holiday or seasonal theme day with a special themed menu to add interest and excitement to the menu. Other student favorites include our monthly “brunch for lunch” program and our “lucky sticker day,” when we randomly mark fruits and veggies with stickers each lunch period and provide the winning students with a free healthy snack.

Visual Merchandising

Visual merchandising directs our customers to where they want to go to eat in our cafes and creates visual appeal to assist our students in making delicious, healthy menu choices. It helps to set an expectation for the customer's overall dining experience and is therefore an important component of the cafe environment. We use age-appropriate graphics, visuals and serving vessels and to showcase menu options and help the children select healthy meals in a warm and inviting setting.

  • Small Item Identifiers identify individual items, such as salad bar offerings
  • Poster Holders can be mounted on walls or ceilings and offer important nutrition messages, showcase a la carte offerings or highlight special programs
  • Entrance systems invite customers into the cafes

Serving Lines

Whitsons has developed a new standard look for serving counters at the elementary and secondary school levels. These looks can be customized with several finish options. The finishes can also be matched on existing serving lines by retrofitting over the existing counterwork. Custom designs are also available to suit the special needs of a school community.

  • Elementary Serving Lines. Whitsons' elementary serving line design utilizes colorful branding that reinforces our award-winning Nutrition Safari® program. The colorful panels can be mounted to new or existing stainless counters, either by drilling or using double-sided adhesive. The look includes a deck-mounted pole with a sample plate tray and signholder for the weekly or daily menu options, as well as a graphic of the characters in the jeep. Graphics can be sized to fit any custom counter configuration.
  • Secondary Serving Lines. Our secondary serving counter design includes pre-mounted signholders for our oval station identifiers, complete with a canopy featuring overhead pendant lighting. Plus, they flip over for an optional second sign, which is useful for dual-purpose stations. There are several standard Corian and laminate finish options from which to choose; finishes can also be customized to meet the needs of individual districts. Laminate choices can also be retrofitted to existing counters to match the look.
