Sustainability

The actions we take today will be the legacy we leave future generations. As a concerned corporate citizen, Whitsons Culinary Group™ continuously strives to conserve and preserve the earth’s resources. By recycling, reusing and reducing our global footprint, each Whitsons team member plays a critical role in safeguarding our planet. Our efforts include purchasing locally, using the latest technologies and techniques to conserve resources, recycling used vegetable oil, paper, plastic and metal and a host of other initiatives. Together, we are...”Whitsons Taskforce Green™,” helping to conserve and preserve the earth’s resources for future generations.

Recycling and Green Initiatives

Whitsons is committed to taking a leadership role in environmental conservation. We work diligently to be conscientious citizens and implement policies that serve to limit our use of natural resources, minimize waste and maximize recycling and reuse wherever possible. In addition to the programs and initiatives listed herein, we continue to seek new ways to help protect the environment and preserve the earth’s natural resources.

SUSTAINABILITY. We are committed to providing our customers the freshest and most wholesome ingredients available in the marketplace. We seek to minimize the use of processed foods and prefer whole and natural foods whenever possible. We use trans fat-free oils in our operations. We specify that our distributors contract locally for produce and dairy products, thereby supporting the local agricultural community. This reduces the need for long haul transportation, which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

RECYCLING. We are committed to utilizing recyclable material in our operations where our clients have recycling programs. We have also identified a variety of supplies that are made from recycled material. Our recycling practices reduce waste and landfill usage, which in turn helps the environment.

BIODEGRADABLE. We are committed to using products that do not harm the environment. Many of our cleaning supplies and certain containers are biodegradable. We also work with interested clients on composting projects.

Increased Use of Local Products

Developing local partnerships is a great way to provide a high quality program while supporting the local community. There are numerous benefits to purchasing locally, including: stimulation of local economy and support of family farms, cleaner environment with less fuel burned from local shipping and providing products that are fresher and healthier. Furthermore, the local suppliers we do business with must meet the same high standards of quality, safety and sanitation we require of all our vendors.

Our policy is to source locally whenever available and in season. We currently source an average of 52% of our product mix locally, either through our distributors or by developing partnerships directly with local vendors. Some of the core items sourced locally include produce, dairy, fresh bakery items, juices, water, coffee, pizza dough, beef and poultry, seafood, dressings, pastas and snacks.

We envision a world where environmental conservation will someday become as natural and automatic as taking a breath of fresh air; a place where organizations won’t need a “policy” and a “process team” to take action. If we succeed in teaching our children, and ourselves, together we can truly change the world.
